Belle de jour (1967) - Drama.  Séverine Serizy (Deneuve) is 23, extremely attractive, classy, and newly wed to Pierre (Sorel), a young, well off surgeon with a promising career...  But from Séverine’s vivid and tormented dreams, we learn that there’s something wrong with her sexuality, something that deeply affects her emotional balance and her marriage...


Emploi du temps, L' (2001), (Time Out) - Drama.  Vincent Renault (Aurielien Recoing) feels that his job is suffocating him. So, instead of going to his business meetings, he drives his car for miles, singing away at the music on the radio and letting his thoughts drift, with a childish smile on his face...


Espíritu de la colmena, El (1973), (The Spirit of the Beehive) - Drama.  Made in 1973 by Spanish director Victor Erice it tells the tale of two young sisters, Ana and Isabel, living in post civil war rural Spain during the early forties with a father who ponders on the meaning of life as he tends his beehives, and a mother who, so bored with the life she has ended up with, dreams of an imaginary lover in a far off place, but where all sadly carry the heavy burden of Franco's oppression...


Harem, L (1967), (The Harem) - Italian director Marco Ferreri, known for his social commitment, takes a radical stance on feminist issues - in this story a seductive woman pushes three men to the limit when she wants all three of them...


Ils (Them) (2006) - Horror/Thriller. A fascinating and well made French/Romanian offering based on a true story, and one of the more effective thriller/horror genres films.


Laberinto del fauno, El (2006), (Pan's Labyrinth) - Fantasy/Drama.  Set in the ragged aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, it tells the story of Ofelia - a quiet little girl with an insatiable passion for reading and storytelling, a deep well of sensitive creativity - who finds herself thrown into two starkly contrasting environments. Fantasy/Drama.


Man cheng jin dai huang jin jia (2006) (Curse of the Golden Flower) - Action/Drama. Yimou Zhang's visual feast is a tale of a bitter family feud set in the Tang Dynasty that can only be described as an incestuous Godfather - where we see a wife and ex-wife pit their wits against their husband the Emperor, father against son, brother against brother and a love triangle that ties it all up neatly in a bundle...


Meglio gioventů, La (2003), (The Best of Youth) - The Best of Youth is a six hour long journey in time and location, from the North to the South of Italy – it’s set in Rome, Turin, Tuscany, Sicily -, from 1966 to the new millennium.  It takes the viewer through enchanting cities and landscapes, torn apart by floods and violent demonstrations, paralysed by moral and political corruption, by the Mafia’s killings and code of silence, by the inefficiencies and distortions of the institutions, and by chronic unemployment...


Noche de los girasoles, La (The Night of the Sunflowers) (2006) - An intriguing and well made Spanish film... Written and directed by Jose Sánchez-Cabezudo, La Noche De Los Girasoles tells the story of a sexual assault and rape in a small Spanish town and is told from several different perspectives...


Paradise Now (2005) - Crime/Drama.  Two childhood friends are recruited for a suicide bombing in Tel Aviv...


Persona (1966) - Drama. Elisabeth is on the stage acting as Elektra, when suddenly in the middle of the play she stops speaking, remains silent for a minute, then a grimace appears on her face.  From then on she shuts herself off in absolute silence.  The actress is admitted to a psychiatric hospital...


Quo Vadis, Baby? (2005) - Drama/Thriller from Italian director Gabriele Salvatores.  A private detective investigates her sister's suicide many years earlier.


Sjunde inseglet, Def (1957) (The Seventh Seal.. Shot in black and white with some wonderful lighting it's a symbolic piece of film making packed with imagery and a certain degree of irony, as we see death stalk Antonius Block throughout the film as he encounters several different characters on his journey.  Directed by Ingmar Bergman.


Suna no onna (1964) (Woman in the Dunes) - Drama.  It’s a strange haunting Japanese film from 1964 that concerns the fate of an entomologist who is befriended by some local villagers and offered to stay the night with a local widow.  This involves him climbing down a rope ladder to her house that exists at the bottom of a sand pit.  All seems well until the next morning when the ladder has gone and he begins to understand that he is her late husband’s replacement...


Transylvania (2006) - Drama. Zingarina (Asia Argento) arrives in Transylvania in search of her lover Milan, a musician, who has left her without explanation...


Volver (2006) - Drama.  Centering on the lives of two sisters Raimunda (Penolope Cruz) and Sole (Lona Duenas) who's parents both died in a house fire several years before and how they both come to terms with this and each other.  Sole is divorced and Raimunda has just been relieved of her tiresome husband leaving her and her daughter to carry on...


Whale Rider (2003) - Drama.  The Maori people of a New Zealand costal community claim to be descendants from the legendary whale rider, Paikea, who was taken to safety to New Zealand on the back of a whale.  One of the community’s leaders, Koro (Rawiri Paratene), hopes that the birth of his grandchildren will bring a boy who could be chief but during childbirth the mother and one of the twins, a boy, dies leaving a granddaughter called Pia...
