Children of Men (2006) - Action/Sci-fi/Drama, ...Based on the novel by P.D. James, Children of Men places us in a not too distant future (2027 to be exact) where the world is in chaos and disarray. For reasons unknown (but many intimated) no birth has taken place in 18 years... ...there are many layers to it all... On a socio-political scale - racism, misogyny, mass fear, the often double standards of revolutionary activity. On intimate and deeply personal levels - friendship, bravery, love, loss... Cinderella Man (2005) - Drama, ...Directed by Ron Howard, this film is based on the true story of legendary boxer Jim Braddock. Born of Irish parents in New Jersey, Braddock starts to do well in the boxing ring until his fortune changes and poverty strikes. The film really captures the bleakness and hardship of the American Depression and makes for compelling viewing as Braddock's struggle somehow becomes ours... ...don't miss this one! A fantastic film about a real underdog who struggles with fierce determination and spirit to get back on his feet. Superb acting all round... Hairspray (2007) - Comedy/Musical - A sweet musical twist on a tart subject makes a cinematic tongue tingler. To modify a quote from the movie a little; If you don’t laugh during Hairspray, your skin is on too tight!

Little Fish (2006) - Drama/Crime, ...a very powerful and haunting piece and well worth seeking out... Million Dollar Baby (2004) - Drama, ...a heartfelt story that doesn't get over-sentimental. Great acting and script create credible and convincing characters. A memorable drama that changes direction towards the end... Moulin Rouge (2001) - ...Set in the early 1900’s this musical love story is an extraordinary original mix of filmmaking, theatre and rock video... Munich (2005) - ...Steven Spielberg’s gripping political thriller based on the events that followed from the massacre of the Israeli athletes by Black September at the 1972 Munich Olympics... My Darling Clementine (1946) - ...One of John Ford's best loved Westerns and one of the greatest Westerns ever made... Mystic River (2003) - Drama/Detective ...a dark compelling story that is extremely well told and acted... Pan's Labyrinth (2006) - Set in the ragged aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, it tells the story of Ofelia - a quiet little girl with an insatiable passion for reading and storytelling, a deep well of sensitive creativity - who finds herself thrown into two starkly contrasting environments. Fantasy/Drama. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) - Adventure, ...this is an 18th century swashbuckling pirate tale complete with hidden treasure, sword fights, parrots and other pirate paraphernalia. This is a real summer holiday blockbuster that hits the right note... Road To Perdition (2002) - Crime/Drama, ...Sam Mendes puts a new slant on the mobster/gangland movie and introduces a human element by showing the love, protectiveness and aspirations that a father has for his son... Seven (1995) - Crime/Thriller, ...Screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker interweaves fast paced, witty dialogues with quotations and references to literary masterpieces... Seabiscuit (2003) - Drama, ...based on the true story of a famous American racehorse who, not only changed the lives of those involved in its training, but also, caught the imagination of the American people... Sjunde inseglet, Def (1957) (The Seventh Seal) Shot in black and white with some wonderful lighting it's a symbolic piece of film making packed with imagery and a certain degree of irony, as we see death stalk Antonius Block throughout the film as he encounters several different characters on his journey. The Bourne Supremacy (2004) - ...based on the second of Robert Ludlum's books this superior thriller has all the ingredients to make it stand out in its class. The Bourne Supremacy is well paced, clever, exciting and entertaining...

Action/Fantasy, ... The Proposition (2005) - Drama/Australian "Western", ...a superb if harrowing revenge Western... albeit one set in Australia in the 1880's... what makes it so good are the characters... There Will Be Blood (2007) - Drama/Crime - Set in the late 1890's it tells the story of a budding oil baron who sets about setting up an empire with dogged determination and obsession... War Of The Worlds (2005) - Sci-Fi/Action ...the special effects in the movie are brilliant. The alien Tripods look menacing as they move across the land destroying everything in their path but it is more the speed and merciless slaughter of the attack that will frighten. The sound is also excellent in this movie and the noise in scenes like the lightening storm will make you jump out of your seat! White Heat (1949) - Gangster/Crime - Raoul Walsh's taut dynamic gangster movie from 1949 - that grabs you in the opening moments and never lets go. James Cagney is Arthur "Cody" Jarrett, a psychotic, mother fixated hoodlum who runs a violent gang specialising in major robberies. |
