The Skeleton Key is a
thriller/horror movie set in New Orleans. A young nurse, Caroline Ellis
(Kate Hudson), is unhappy in the hospital where she works where the
patient is considered to be merely a number. She takes on a job looking after
Ben Devereaux (John Hurt) who has had a stroke. He lives with his wife,
Violet (Gena Rowlands), in an isolated house in the swamps outside New
Orleans.
When Caroline moves into the
house spooky things begin to happen. Caroline bravely tries to solve the
mystery of the house and ties to help Ben who seems to be asking for help.
Well portrayed is the heat and
sticky atmosphere of the deep American South and the Devereaux's house is
an authentic rambling old New Orleans' mansion. The French language is
featured in the film adding to its authenticity. A strong cast is in place
for the four main characters and the acting is good all round.
While not scary in the 'horror
sense' you will be kept on the edge of your seat as the tension in the
spooky house increases and Caroline just can't help herself from delving
into the mystery. The ending however is complicated and is a bit
disturbing leaving one with a dissatisfied feeling.
