  Plot Summary & Review

Not being a huge Sci-Fi fan but a big fan of Danny Boyle's work I went to see this with an open mind, but sadly it's not a film I can rave about as it's not without its flaws.  However, it does have its moments and is very much a film of three parts in as much as the middle is really good but the beginning and end kind of let it down.

An eight man crew aboard the Icarus is sent to re-ignite the sun and prevent mankind from completely freezing into inevitable destruction.  They embark on a two year journey through space, that has already been tried by another craft several years earlier but which was unsuccessful.  The first twenty minutes are disjointed and slightly confusing but when you get past that it seems to open up a bit and we see a storyline take shape.  The ever improving Cillian Murphy plays Capa the hero of the hour with some fine support from Michelle Yeoh and Chris Evans to name but two.  However, this film tries to pay homage to too many films that have gone before it principally; 2001 A Space Odyssey and Alien.  It has moments of high drama and the middle section of the film certainly held my interest with some well paced scenes and great character interaction, but I just felt the ending was a tad overcooked (pardon the pun) which was a real shame as when the camera pans back for the final shot just before the credits roll it's quite brilliant and touching in its own way.

Some excellent special effects and it’s certainly watchable, especially for those who have a penchant for all things scientific but the major problem I had with this film was the believability factor and I just found some of the scenes lurching between fantastical to incredulous… and in doing so it just didn't leave me wanting more.  I'm sure this film will have very mixed reviews… that said, it's not the worse I've seen by far and I believe Boyle had a small budget to work with by Hollywood standards anyway and I have taken that into consideration…  In a word - Imaginative.
