Serendipity Main Cast:
Director: Peter Chelsom Rating: 2 Stars - Only if you have nothing better to do. Plot Summary: On Christmas Eve in New York’s Bloomingdale’s department store Jonathan Trager (John Cusack) and Sara (Kate Beckinsale) find themselves fighting over the last pair of black gloves in the store. Jonathan does the honourable thing and lets the attractive stranger have the gloves. They laugh about it and Sara offers to buy Jonathan a coffee in return. They go to a café called “Serendipity” and as they chat, there is an instant attraction between the two. Later that evening after some romantic ice skating Jonathan asks Sara for her phone number but as she hands him the number a gust of wind blows it out of her hand. Superstitious Sara thinks that this is a sign that they should not be together and decides that faith should decide if destiny could bring them back together. She thinks up a way in which each of them can get the others phone number but only if faith and lucky accidents (serendipity) are to play a part… Review: This is a real light-hearted romantic Christmas Holiday movie. The plot itself is interesting enough and I liked the plan that Kate devised in order to see if faith would allow them to find each other again. But in spite of this main idea there is very little substance to the movie and it is too big on sentimentality. It becomes a little tedious waiting for the predictable ending. There is some good comedy but there are also some almost “slapstick” silly moments than do not fit in. The John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale combination did work well together and as the saying goes they do make a lovely couple! Some of the dialogue between Jonathan and his friend (Jeremy Piven) is very funny. Overall it is an entertaining inoffensive but forgettable movie. Lasting thought: serendipity, gift of making fortunate discoveries by accident. Reviewed by Niall Quinn, PremierMovieReviews 2002 MAINPAGE RECENT CINEMA RELEASES RECENT VIDEO RELEASES THE ARCHIVES |
