The idea behind Rumour Has It
is quite clever. Sarah Huttinger (Jennifer Aniston) has just got
engaged to boyfriend Jeff (Mark Ruffalo) but she isn't feeling as happy as
she should be. She gets even more confused when she returns home to
Pasadena for her sister's wedding, and stumbles across the family secret.
I don't want to spoil the story so I won't reveal the secret but while the
idea is good it doesn't provide enough material to support the entire
movie. After the first 40 minutes the story begins to run out of
steam and never recovers.
The movie isn't all comedy and
romance as there is also an element of drama that doesn't completely gel
with the light-hearted comedy. Perhaps more emphasis should have
been placed on the comedy as there are really only a few big laughs
throughout the movie.
The characters seem to lack a
little spark except maybe for Sarah's feisty grandmother Katharine
(Shirley MacLaine), but somehow they don't particularly endear
themselves, and you might feel a little detached from the proceedings as
you watch. |
Bottom Line: There is a
good idea behind the movie but it either isn't enough, or it isn't
developed sufficiently to keep things interesting for the entire length of the movie.
The comedy is a bit hit-and-miss with only a few really big laughs.
