Director: Boaz Yakin Rating: 4 STARS - RECOMMENDED Plot Summary: Based on a true story, the film is set in 1971 against the backdrop of racial intolerance and the Civil Rights Movement. The high school in Alexandria, Virginia is now integrated and has opened its doors to African-American students. The all-white football team, 'The Titans', are completely against the introduction of black players into their team. For political reasons the successful football coach Bill Yoast (Will Patton) has been replaced by, African-American, Herman Boone (Denzel Washington). The new coach has to overcome racism and intolerance in the school team and the local community. His first challenge is to try and unite the team when he brings them away to training camp before the start of the football season... Review: This is an entertaining drama that tells the story of real people and events. There is plenty of American-Football scenes but not too many to become boring and they are perfectly balanced with the rest of the film. The film is a well-intentioned, feel-good movie. It is so well-intentioned that it is a little artificial in places and some of the scenes are a little corny. One particular scene that fell into the "over sentimental trap" was an "inspirational" speech given by the coach Herman Boone at the site of the Battle Of Gettysburg to try and bond his team. Denzel Washington and Will Patton are both excellent in their roles and both are very credible as success driven football coaches working in difficult circumstances.
