  Review

Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) owes Davey Jones (Bill Nightly) a huge debt - his soul!  The only way he can get out of the debt is by recovering the elusive 'Dead Man’s Chest'.  This means plenty of swash-buckling antics as Captain Jack tries to escape the clutches of Davey Jones and his army of sea-phantoms.  His friends Elizabeth Swann (Kiera Knightley) and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) who are due to get married get caught up in the adventure.

This is the second Pirates of the Caribbean film in a set of three.  The first Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was released in 2003 with a third film to come that will complete the trilogy.  Everyone wants to know if it is as good as the first film but, while it is good fun and entertaining I would have to say that it falls short.  One problem is that the story is confusing at times and it is hard to know what exactly is going on.

Some parts of the story seem totally unnecessary and it is difficult to see why they were included as they don't enhance the story.  Perhaps the plot is being setup for the third Pirates of the Caribbean film.

There is plenty of action, at times too much, you’ve just about grasped one scene and you’re launched into another.

Johnny Depp doesn't disappoint as Captain Jack Sparrow and has plenty of entertaining scenes, my favourite was when he is captured by the cannibals and they act like he is their leader.  Orlando Bloom’s character, Will Turner, isn't as interesting this time around.  Bill Nightly gives a fantastic performance as Davey Jones, even through all the make-up you can see the expression in his eyes.  With too much posing and pouting Kiera Knightly’s character can be quite irritating at times.

Bottom Line: Good fun and not bad at all for a sequel but it's too long.  If you haven't seen the first film it would be worth watching as there are a lot of jokes that follow on into this film.
