The Perfect Storm

Main Cast:

  • Diane Lane is Christina Cotter

Director:  Wolfgang Peterson

Rating:  3 Stars - Worth A Watch.

Plot Summary:  Billy Tyne (George Clooney) is the Captain of the Andrea Gail a Swordfishing boat operating out of Gloucester, Massachusetts.  His last few expeditions were somewhat unsuccessful.  Because of this he decides to set to sea again in spite of the fact that the stormy season is coming.  He plans to go further this time to an area known as the Flemish Cap.  He and his crew set out to sea unaware that unusual weather fronts are coming together to produce "the perfect storm"..............

Review:  This story is based on truth and is dedicated to all the fishermen and rescue personnel that have lost their lives at sea.  The story starts off well enough and the portrayal of life in the fishing village and the pressure on the crews to make a good catch is realistic and interesting.  The relief and joy of the community, family and loved ones when the fishing boats return safely after weeks at sea is tangible.  The special effects produce some great storm and hurricane scenes but these scenes are too long and while the special effects are great there is no sense of drama.  Neither is there a sense of emotion or sympathy for the characters.  The attempts to create this sense of sympathy, especially towards the end of the movie, are corny and clichéd.  In the end there is a lack of interest in the plight of the characters.

George Clooney was not totally convincing as the boat's Captain.  Mark Wahlberg who played Bobby, one of the crew, deserves a mention in spite of a dreadful corny scene towards the end.
