Plot Summary:  Set in America in 1776 Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) has a notorious reputation as a fighter from the French and Indian War.  But now, a widower, his wish is to work his farm and raise his seven children in peace by trying to avoid the inevitable war with the British.  However, his sons and in particular the eldest Gabriel (Heath Ledger) are eager to fight.  Gabriel signs up and events unfold to draw his father into the fight.  Both fight side by side with a group of militia and attract the attention of the evil British Colonel Tavington (Jason Isaacs) who is determined to put a stop to Benjamin Martin and his men at all costs.

Review:  I totally enjoyed this movie but if you are expecting an insight into American History or the events of that period you will be disappointed.  This is a "popcorn movie" a  "summer holiday movie" full of clichés, mostly predictable and yet it is entertaining and exciting.  The battle scenes are spectacular the pace and story exciting.  The movie ends up with the simple well-worn tale of the good against evil.  There is also a lot of Hollywood American flag waving (Literally).  What else would you expect from the director of Independence Day?  My advice is; buy your tickets, get the popcorn, get comfortable and be entertained.

There are a few unnecessary gory scenes.  One in particular should have been toned down as it served no purpose.  Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger play the hero role to perfection.  This was the same role for Mel as in Braveheart.  The evil British Colonel Tavington (Jason Isaacs) was evil, sadistic, sinister and totally "over the top", an all round excellent super-villain!
