When long-time dreamer, but genuinely nice-guy Larry Daley (Ben Stiller)
is taken to one side by his long suffering ex-wife and told if he
doesn't get a regular job soon access to son Nick (Jake Cherry) will be in
jeopardy, he knows she means business. But despite his eccentric and
unstable lifestyle, his son is of paramount importance to him and
therefore he reluctantly agrees to take a job as a nightshift security
guard at the Natural History Museum, but gets more then he bargained for
when after dark the exhibits come to life. It's an excellent idea with an
all star cast including Dick Van Dyke, Robin Williams, Mickey Rooney, Owen
Wilson, Steve Coogan, and Ricky Gervais as the museum's curator (though he
does seem somewhat out of place in this film and doesn't quite
pull it off giving a
rather stilted performance).
It's by no means a laugh a minute, but it's fun with a capital F as you
see Stiller being chased through the museum by the likes of a prehistoric
dinosaur skeleton, Attila The Hun, Teddy Roosevelt and a Bronze statue of
Christopher Columbus to name but a few! It has all the ingredients that
children love, a mischievous monkey who repeatedly steals the security
keys, and all manner of animals and historical figures that dash about
causing utter mayhem as soon as the museum closes, plus a subplot
involving a bungled attempt by the previous security guards at stealing
some Egyptian artefacts in order to bolster their pensions.
Despite the hilarity when you do scratch the surface there is an
underlying morality tale - that being that we humans need to learn from
the past in order to deal not only with the present, but also the future,
and perhaps learn to embrace each others cultures a little more to enable
us to live far more harmoniously as a human race, however, this may
well have been lost on some of the younger children in the audience. It
has to be said this Night at the Museum will never win any prizes, but it's a good fun
family movie, that allows both children and adults alike to revel in the
chaos of it all!
