Review
Mr. Deeds is a remake of the
popular Frank Capra’s movie, Mr. Deeds Goes To Town, with Gary
Cooper. It’s a while since I’ve seen the original so I won’t make
comparisons. Mr. Deeds has a predictable, lightweight story, which is okay
for a comedy but only if there are plenty of laughs. Unfortunately this
comedy is only occasionally very funny. It is very much a string of
sketches strung out on a predictable story line and these sketches are a
little "hit and miss" with the humour.
As a romantic comedy the
romance side of things doesn’t really work that well. Deeds meets Babe
Bennett (Winona Ryder) and falls in love but there is no spark between
them and it was difficult to care what happens to them in the end.
Neither Adam Sandler nor Winona
Tyder endear themselves in any great way. John Turturro plays Deed’s
Spanish butler and he is the funniest character in the movie.
The
Bottom Line: The story is too predictable and there aren't enough big
laughs to make up for this.
