Plot Summary:  John Klein (Richard Gere), a Washington Post journalist, and his wife are driving home after going to see their new dream home.  His wife is driving and when she suddenly swerves to avoid something on the road the car crashes.  He is okay but she is unconscious and is rushed to hospital.  When she wakes up she tells her husband that there was “something” on the road.  She starts to have “visions” and the doctors find that she has a rare brain condition that kills her.  Later John Klein finds himself investigating strange phenomenon 400 miles away in the town of Point Pleasant.  He discovers that some of the people living in the town have had visions not unlike the visions his wife had.

Review: This is a curious thriller/mystery story that is not unlike a feature length movie of The X-Files but in this case the story is based on true unexplained events.  The strange events and visions described are made more real and unnerving by the fact that the movie is often filmed at night or in shadow.  As John Klein starts to investigate and interview people in the town the movie almost has a documentary feel about it.  This also adds to the realism.  The film also avoids over dramatising the events but instead tells the story in an almost matter of fact way.

The main characters John Klein (Richard Gere), local policewoman Connie Parker (Laura Linney) and local farmer Gordon Smallwood (Will Patton) are all very plausible.  They appear very confused and unnerved by the events in the town and the fact that the people in the town cannot clearly describe what they saw or heard somehow makes it more believable.  The realism is also helped by the fact that Richard Gere and Laura Linney are not always filmed “looking their best”.  They often look tired and weary.

Lasting thought: Not all events can be explained by logic and reason.
