Minority Report  (12's)

  Plot Summary

The year is 2054 and John Anderton (Tom Cruise) is the chief of the special Pre-Crime Unit. Three individuals known as “pre-cogs” have the ability to give details of murders that will take place in the future and the “murderers” are arrested by the Pre-Crime Unit before the murder takes place!

Washington D.C., where the Unit is operating, is murder free but the Unit is being investigated by Danny Witwer (Colin Farrell) for any flaws in the system. A system that arrests people before the crime is committed must be infallible.  When the “pre-cogs” predict that John Anderton will murder someone he goes on the run to try and clear his name. “Everybody runs…”

  Review

This futuristic sci-fi is full of great special effects and some great ideas. Philip K Dick who also wrote Blade Runner wrote this and there are some similarities between the two. With Steven Spielberg as the director it is hard not to expect great things from this movie even after the disappointment of A.I. (Artificial Intelligence).

Some of the ideas and images of the year 2054 are great. The images of super highways that run vertically as well as horizontal are fantastic. I particularly liked the computers that welcome you, by name, (having read your personal details from a retinal scan) when you enter a shop. The computers even suggested items that you might wish to buy based on your previous purchases.

However the film is not without its flaws. Most noticeably the “run-of-the-mill” ending is a bit of an anti-climax. The ending seemed to wrap things up just a little too nice and neat. There are also a few unlikely bits that are a little hard to ignore and I don’t mean the futuristic stuff!

All the main characters play their parts well and I’m sure “our own” Colin Farrell, former Ballykissangel actor, is destined for leading roles in the future.

It is difficult to rate this film with its good points on one hand and flaws on the other. It is best described as an ordinary cop story set in a fantastic futuristic world.
