Meet The Parents

Main Cast:

  • Robert De Niro is Jack
  • Ben Stiller is Greg Focker
  • Teri Polo is Pam
  • Blythe Danner is Dina

Director: Jay Roach

Rating:  3 Stars - Worth A Watch

Plot Summary: Greg Focker (Ben Stiller) wants to ask his girlfriend Pam (Teri Polo) to marry him but first he intends to tell her father Jack (Robert De Niro) his intentions and seek his approval.  The opportunity arises when they travel to Pam's parents' house for her sister's wedding.

Jack doesn't receive his beloved daughter's boyfriends very well.  In his eyes no one is good enough for his little angel.  From the start Greg and Jack don't exactly "hit it off " and anything that can go wrong does go wrong...

Review: Everything goes wrong for poor Greg!  First his suitcase is lost when he and Pam travel to her parents.  Then he starts off on the wrong foot with Pam's scrutinising "fault-finding", humourless father.  The harder Greg tries to fit in with her family the more he seems to offend them and alienate himself.  There are plenty of good laughs in this movie.  The viewer can easily identify with the stress and embarrassment that Greg finds himself in.  This is what makes the film so funny.  The viewer can sit back and sympathise with Greg and yet say "at least it's not me this time" or "as bad as I am, at least I didn't do that".

Robert De Niro is one of the best actors around and he is excellent as the disapproving father, but I can't help feeling that as good as he is in comedies it will never come close to his "serious" performances in the likes of "The Deer Hunter", "GoodFellas", "This Boys Life" or "Heat".

Ben Stiller plays the modest, earnest, well-meaning boyfriend perfectly and gets across the nervousness and awkwardness that he feels when meeting his future in-laws.

Teri Polo was a good match for Stiller although she didn't get a chance to be involved in the best laughs.

So the next time you "put your foot in it" remember it could have been worse, a lot worse!
