A fascinating and well
made French/Romanian offering based on a true story, and one of the more
effective thriller/horror genres films I've seen for quite sometime. It
opens with some really tense scenes of a mother and daughter breaking down
on a country road late at night - you don't see them in the film again but
it's linked to the story line and sets up the rest of the film perfectly. |
Clementine (Olivia Bonamy)
teaches French in Bucharest but lives with her writer partner Lucas
(Michael Cohen) in an isolated rambling house in the country. Clem races
home from school one Friday evening with some groceries and wine in hand
ready for what she hopes will be a restful and romantic weekend at home.
How wrong she is..., as they are both about to embark on a helter skelter
terror ride. Initially she and Lucas are awakened in the early hours by
strange phone calls, then they notice her car has been moved along the
driveway, and suddenly the television switches itself mysteriously on -
they are no longer alone is would seem?
It's not
long before they realise they have intruders in the house, and a cat and
mouse game ensues. But who is in the house and what are their motives?
The atmosphere and tension in this film is very well done, helped in no
small way by a good soundtrack and some believable performances.
Its running
time of just under an hour and a half leaves little time for you to catch
your breath, though there is a short tranquil preamble that helps build
the tension nicely.
The ending
is short and brutal, and you really have to use your imagination, that
said it certainly left its mark and I had that uncomfortable feeling as I
put my lights out last night, and double backed just to check my door was
locked! In a word – Chilling!
