Not bad start to 2008 as we see Will Smith as Robert
Neville a former scientist and the last fully functioning man on earth, a
sole survivor (or so he thinks) of a world dominating virus created by man
to cure cancer, but which instead manages to kill 588 million people in
2009 when it raged around the world.

In 2012 we see Neville (along
with his trusted dog Sam) cut a sad, solitary figure as he wanders
aimlessly around a deserted and overgrown New York City, having
continual flashbacks about his last memories of family life, whilst
religiously sending out messages to anyone who may have survived.
Robert is also trying to keep
himself alive for the sake of the human race (as he appears somehow
immune to the virus) and for those who have been infected, as he
attempts desperately to find a cure.
However, in order to find the
cure, he has to seek out the infected beings at night, who seem to
have completely forgotten how to function as humans. They hunt in
packs killing anything that crosses their path. So Robert either has
to kill them to survive, or capture them and incarcerate them in his
underground lab for research purposes, in the vain hope of finding the
elusive formula that will facilitate mankind's ultimate survival. |
The special
effects in I Am Legend are quite brilliant, with some wonderful
opening scenes around the streets of New York. Will Smith who has to
ostensibly carry this film single handedly for around 70 per cent of the
running time (no mean feat by anyone’s standards) executes it very well,
whilst still managing to keep it interesting. However, the pace lacks a
wee bit of fluidity on times, coming across as just a tad too noble for
its own good, and it's missing the grit and hard edged reality of 28
Days Later for instance. That said, I Am Legend is an
enjoyable, well made film, with the charismatic Smith adding yet another
worthwhile offering to his ever growing list of movies. In a word -
Entertaining.
