Plot Summary
Ramu (Jimi Mistry) is a “modern”
dance teacher in India specialising in the Macarena! He has aspirations of
being a famous actor. He
leaves his home in India and goes to America to find fame and fortune.
When he meets up with his friend in New York he discovers that the
stories of luxury apartments, flash cars and money are only dreams. The American dream. He
first gets a job as a waiter but later, by accident, he finds himself
masquerading as a spiritual teacher, at a high society party.
Before he knows it he finds himself spouting advice about sexual
enlightenment. He becomes a
sex Guru…
Review
This comedy starts off well and
seems quite promising but after the first twenty minutes it starts to
flounder. Behind the humour, which is funny at times but not often
enough, there is little or no substance, just a predictable plot with a
well-worn message about following your dreams and your heart.
The movie does have a kind of
happy, innocent tone, which is a little out of place in a sex comedy.
This happy feel-good factor is created, mainly, by a number of
catchy tongue-in-cheek Indian dance scenes.
Heather Graham plays the
unlikely character, Sharonna, a porn star who unwittingly provides Ramu
(Jimi Mistry) with material for his role of sex Guru.
She does a funny Indian version of You’re The One That I Want
from the movie Grease.
Marisa Tomei plays the very
wealthy, very flaky, Lexi. Another
unlikely character. Lexi
believes Ramu is a genuine spiritual leader and takes it upon herself to
introduce him to the people who can make him famous.
This
movie is quite acceptable for “midweek TV viewing” but not worth a
cinema visit unless you have nothing better to do!
