The Grinch

The Grinch hated Christmas!  The whole Christmas season! Now, please don't ask why.  No one quite knows the reason. It could be that his head wasn't screwed on quite right. It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight. But I think that the most likely reason of all may have been that his heart was two sizes too small.

Plot Summary: The Grinch is an ugly, green, hairy creature that lives alone in a cave above the town of Who-ville.  He turned his back on the town and the townsfolk many years ago and now lives in isolation where he wallows in self-pity.  The townsfolk fear the Grinch and seldom talk about him.  With Christmas coming The Grinch's frustration grows because if there's one thing the Grinch hates more that Who-ville it's Christmas.  As the townsfolk of Who-ville count down the days to Christmas they need someone to lead them in the celebrations.  The Mayor calls for nominations.  Much to his horror a little girl , Cindy Lou Who, nominates the Grinch.  The Mayor laughs and says that if the Grinch comes down from his mountain hideaway he will award him the honour of leading hte celebrations.  On the other hand if the Grinch doesn't show up then he himself will lead the celebrations.  The fearless Cindy Lou Who climbs the mountain to try and persuade The Grinch to come down and accept the honour...

Review:  The Movie is based on the classic children's book by Theodor Seuss Geisel and Ron Howard has really brought this book to life.  I'm sure this isn't the first time that you have heard that a book has been brought to life but in this case it is true!  The sets, the props, the costumes, the makeup and the vibrant colours really make you feel that you have jumped into a cartoon.  Unlike other children's movies this will appeal to adults as well.  There are plenty of laughs in this movie for kids and adults.

After a slow start Jim Carrey picks up the pace and he is lightning quick with the laughs.  One after the other they roll out.  This is what he does best.  The voice, the expressions the timing; perfect!  Look out for the scene when the Grinch dons a baseball hat and does a Ron Howard impression.  Best support come from Taylor Momsen (Cindy Lou Who) the little girl with the big heart who represents the wholesome good-heartedness of Who-ville.  She tells the Grinch that she too is having "some issues" with the meaning of Christmas!

Every Christmas there is a flood of Children's Movies to try and cash in on the lucrative holiday period.  Only a few of them are worth the admission cost and this is without a doubt one of the good ones.
