This is a film directed by Tony Scott where you need to concentrate and
really focus, as it's a cop thriller with a hefty measure of science
fiction thrown in, so you have to open your mind to all sorts of
possibilities. After a dramatic opening scene, where we see a terrorist
explosion on a packed New Orleans ferry during Mardi Gras weekend, we
meet super smart ATF agent Doug Carlin (Denzel Washington) and FBI Agent
Andrew Pryzwarra (Val Kilmer) who is so impressed with
Carlin's investigation skills he invites him to join a new team that have
developed a program that can allow them, via satellite navigation, to look
back in time for approximately four and a half days.

When the body of a badly burned beautiful black woman Paula Patton (Claire
Kurchever) is washed up on a nearby shore it is initially thought she is
one of the victims of the ferry disaster, however, on closer scrutiny it
would appear her body was found at least an hour before the
explosion itself, hence the investigation takes a completely
different turn. It's while Carlin has the new technology at his disposal
to assist him with his enquiries that he soon realises that it's not
satellite images that he's seeing but somehow this highly secretive
team have developed a time warp that, although untested, may allow him to
time travel?
This is when the film's science fiction element really kicks in, and
Carlin decides to try and transport himself through time in an attempt to
capture the terrorist Carroll Oerstadt (Jim Caviezel) thus preventing
the ferry from exploding, and saving the life of Paula. After
watching Paula at close quarters on screen and meeting her father
during the investigation, Carlin has, to his great surprise, developed
feelings for her. |
It's an action thriller with a difference, and I'm not all together
sure it fully works, that said it's an enjoyable watch, and Washington as
ever gives a solid performance, it has an enigmatic ending that certainly
leaves you satisfied, but with some paradoxical questions left unanswered.
