Brokeback Mountain tells the
story of two young men; one a ranch-hand, and the other a rodeo cowboy, who
meet and form an emotional and sexual relationship while herding sheep on Brokeback
Mountain, Wyoming, in 1963. Although living separate lives, their
friendship and relationship lasts for 20 years. It is a tragic human
drama of wasted opportunities and tormented characters who never
really find peace or happiness.

Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal
play the two gay cowboys Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist. The acting is
great with both giving their best performances to-date. Of the two,
Heath Ledger probably has the edge. He gives a fantastic performance
of a lonely man whose speech and movements are slow and
deliberate - a careful and cautious person never wanting to give too
much away. In comparison Jack Twist the rodeo cowboy is more out-going and
flamboyant. He doesn't want to settle for what he's
got, and dreams of a life that he will never be able to have with Ennis. |
As if to match the mood of the
characters the Wyoming mountains and country, while beautiful, are often filmed
as if to highlight its remoteness, loneliness and harshness.
While destined to win awards perhaps too much has been made of this film. With a
melancholy that is hard to shake the story unravels very slowly and
because of this the film won't appeal to everyone.
Bottom Line: An emotional
drama that is well filmed and acted but might be a bit slow and gloomy for
some.
