Bridget Jones's Diary

Main Cast:

  • Renee Zellweger is Briget Jones
  • Hugh Grant is Daniel Cleaver
  • Colin Firth is Mark Darcy

Director: Sharon Maguire

Rating:  3 STARS. WORTH A WATCH.

Plot Summary: Bridget Jones (Renée Zellweger) is an insecure single woman in her 30’s who is obsessed about her weight, smoking, drinking and most of all about being single. She is afraid of living alone and that when she dies alone she will be eaten by dogs because nobody will find her for months! The story starts when Bridget goes home for the Christmas holidays and her mother tries yet again to fix her up with some eligible man. This time it’s the dour humourless lawyer, Mr. Darcy (Colin Firth). After a disastrous first meeting with Mr. Darcy, Bridget returns to London with a list of new year resolutions as long as your arm! She starts a diary and starts to record all the disappointments in her life. Back in the publishing office where she works she starts flirting with her boss Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant). She then meets Mark Darcy again and discovers that he was once a good friend of Daniel’s and that they now hate each other…

Review: This romantic comedy is based on Helen Fielding’s best selling novel and is definitely a bit of a 'chick flick'. The film as the title suggests revolves around the Bridget Jones character and the disappointments in her life. In particular her disappointing relationships with men and the lack of success in finding a suitable partner. The film is very funny and there are plenty of big laughs. As you can see from the Plot Summary the story is simple enough but as a romantic comedy the movie works better than most but it does however lack the charm that made Notting Hill and Four Weddings And A Funeral so popular. There is a great soundtrack with this movie which helps to keep the whole thing moving along.

By all accounts there were many actresses interested in the role of Bridget Jones but Renée Zellweger got the part in the end. She reportedly had to go to speech classes to get the British accent correct and had to put on two stone in weight.  Her efforts paid off and Zellweger is very funny and likeable in the role.

Hugh Grant and Colin Firth are both very good and for a change Hugh Grant plays the “baddie” in this film. He looks like he enjoyed playing the part.
