Plot Summary
Sarah (Brittany Murphy) comes from a
very wealthy family and has fallen in love with Tom (Ashton Kutcher), a
penniless, part-time DJ on a small radio station. When Sarah and Tom
announce their engagement Sarah’s family accept the decision in spite of
their reservations. After the
perfect wedding, Sarah and Tom head off on what should be the perfect
honeymoon but after a catalogue of misadventures the perfect love match is
not looking so perfect after all…
Review
There isn’t much of a story
behind this comedy so there ought to be plenty of laughs.
Unfortunately the comedy is a bit hit and miss.
For every funny part there are at least twice as many gags that
fall flat. Rather than having
a sharp and witty script a lot of the humour is of the slapstick variety.
The whole flimsy tale becomes tiresome before too long. As I watched this
movie, in a full cinema, the lack of laughter was proof that the comedy
wasn’t working as it should!
Brittany Murphy of
8 Mile
adds a little charm to the proceedings but doesn’t have the charm of
Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality
or Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde.
Strangely Ashton Kutcher seems to appear “out of place” in the
movie. Perhaps it is just that he is desperately in need of some good
lines!
The
Bottom Line: This comedy
suffers from a poor script and it’s over dependence on slapstick gags.
If you liked Sweet Home Alabama
and Two Weeks Notice
you might get something out of this movie but I would wait for the video
and only if you have nothing better to do!
